From the Inroduction:
This manual is designed to help explain the process of teaching or educating a student. A written guidebook for new black belts beginning their journey of teaching and as a reference manual that should provide some insight or a different perspective for veteran instructors. I have decided to begin this manual with what it is to be an effective instuctor. If this is your goal, you must first define what an effective instructor is. This leads into four chapters that discuss various insights into those individuals that are the reason we teach; our students. These sections were written as a guide to help you understand how students think and learn, inspire success through the motivation of the spirit and to identify the various personality types for better communication and performance. Once you understand yourself and your students, now you must understand your curriculum. How to build or design your own curriculum as well as ideas on how to implement or commmicate it to your students.
This book is centered around the Cycle of Training. This concept is the core of our curriculum. The Cycle of Training begins with basic movements or fundamentals. As they progress, we show the students how to execute these techniques in sequence and then with we practice these techniques with partners. The intent of this Cycle is to continually refine these three stages to prepare the individual for the last stage; self-defense. Following the Cycle of Training, the next few chapters outlines concepts of forms, sparring and self-defense. The last few chapters of the book contain plyometric or jump training ideas, stretching exercises and a couple of tests for your assistant instructors. Concluding with a detailed history of both taekwon-do and hapkido as well as a specific history of Rising Star and our lineage.By embracing the decision to be an Instructor, you have assumed the role of a leader, teacher, and mentor. Through the act of wearing a black belt, you will be put to a higher standard. Others will look up to you and see what you have achieved. They will trust you and copy your movements, your attitudes and your ideals. Everything you say and do will be reflected in your students’ actions. Therefore, you should always display virtuous character, teach scientifically, practice with sound theory and embrace the ideals of Taekwondo.
One of the greatest benefits of teaching the martial arts is being instrumental in a student’s personal growth. Being a part of a student’s transformation from a stiff, undisciplined, uncoordinated white belt into an agile, respectful, competitive blackbelt is something amazing to be a part of. This can only be accomplished with a well designed plan, knowledge of human personalities, communicating with understanding, mentoring the students as if they were your own and a love of the art itself. Seeking these theories behind the art of teaching will provide you with a greater depth understanding of the martial arts and provide an opportunity for you to learn how to learn. Once you understand this concept, you can begin to understand how to teach. You will learn through the act of teaching and during this process you will learn it a second time. This new knowledge is gained through a deeper understanding and a different perspective. As blackbelts, we have the responsibility to continually seek more knowledge to advance ourselves and our art.
